This spring, Orchestra “Riga” proudly launches the 14th edition of its annual signature event – the WINDSTREAM 2026 festival – under the motto “Awaken and remember, listen and enjoy!” From March 20 to May 27, music lovers are invited to experience five stylistically and genre-rich concerts across Riga, exploring the broad expressive range of wind music by Latvian and international composers, performed together with acclaimed local and guest soloists and conductors.

Traditionally, WINDSTREAM features five thematically and musically contrasting concerts: the festival opening, concerts on Good Friday and the Day of Remembrance for Victims of the Communist Regime, an Easter family concert for children and parents, and the festival closing concert, which this year is dedicated to contemporary Spanish music.

For the first time, Orchestra “Riga” offers a special SUBSCRIPTION for audiences willing to attend both the festival’s opening and closing concerts at a special, reduced price.

Songs and instrumental works by composer Raimonds Pauls, presented in arrangements for Orchestra RIGA and soloists.

On March 20, the opening concert of the WINDSTREAM 2026 will take place at the VEF Cultural Palace, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Latvia’s beloved popular music master, maestro Raimonds Pauls, and to his outstanding contribution to the development of Latvian music, including his enduring presence in Orchestra RIGA’s repertoire. The concert serves as a tribute and an expression of gratitude for many years of collaboration and countless concerts created together, celebrating the maestro’s remarkable legacy.

Music by Raimonds Pauls will be performed in orchestral arrangements by Vilnis Šmīdbergs and Jēkabs Ozoliņš, featuring vocal soloists Ilona Bagele, Paula Saija, and Raimonds Celms, alongside instrumental soloists Virģīnija Laube-Vītiņa (percussion), Romāns Vendiņš (piano) and Oskars Petrauskis (saxophone).

Each year, WINDSTREAM brings global musical perspectives to Latvian audiences, and this year the spotlight turns to Spanish music. On May 27, the festival invites listeners to a concert featuring the internationally renowned Spanish composer and conductor Óscar Navarro together with violinist Pilar Rubio Albalá. Conceived as an author’s programme, the concert presents Navarro’s original music, performed by Orchestra RIGA and violinist Pilar Rubio under the composer’s own baton.

Óscar Navarro’s music has been heard in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including La Scala in Milan, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Vienna Musikverein. His works have been performed by leading ensembles such as The Cleveland Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, and the Spanish National Symphony Orchestra, among many others. As a conductor, he has appeared internationally across Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Navarro is also the founder of his own symphony orchestra and the music publishing company Óscar Navarro Music. He has received more than 20 international awards and nominations, including honors from the Hollywood Music and Media Awards and a Goya award nomination for his score to the film La Mula. Actively involved in film and television music, he is a member of both the Spanish Film Academy and the Latin Grammy Academy, underscoring his standing in the international music and film community.

Conductor and composer Óscar Navarro is internationally recognized for his work in symphonic and film music. He is especially known for his cinematic and emotionally powerful musical language, which successfully bridges academic tradition and film music aesthetics, making his works widely performed around the world. His compositions are regularly featured at international festivals and competitions, and several have become key works in the contemporary symphonic wind repertoire.

As a film composer, Navarro is a Hollywood Music in Media Awards winner (Los Angeles, USA) and a Goya Spanish Academy Awards nominee. His work has also received other international honors, including the 10th Cinematography Music Critics Awards, Mundo BSO Awards, XIII Goldspirit Awards, and Accolade Music Awards.

Navarro composed the original score for the feature film La mula (dir. Michael Radford), a milestone in his film music career. As a conductor, he leads his own Óscar Navarro Symphony Orchestra and regularly collaborates with professional orchestras and ensembles across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Today, he is regarded as one of the most influential Spanish composers of his generation within the international symphonic wind music scene.

On the eve of Christmas, 23 December, the Riga Congress Hall will transform into a glowing, warm, and joy-filled stop on the festive journey. The stage will resonate with the rhythms of jazz and bolero, intertwining two distinct yet kindred musical worlds. A pre-Christmas evening where music tells its own story — from Ravel’s refined harmonies to beloved Christmas melodies.

In the first half, the audience is invited to immerse themselves in the works of French composer Maurice Ravel. The programme features his Piano Concerto in G — inspired by his travels to America and influenced by George Gershwin and the jazz tradition — performed by the brilliant pianist Rihards Plešanovs with Orchestra “Riga”. Also woven into the concert’s title is Ravel’s iconic Boléro, first performed at the Paris Opera in 1928. Originally composed for a ballet at the suggestion of dancer Ida Rubinstein, it will be heard here in a masterful wind orchestra arrangement by Latvian composer Mendelis Bašs.

In the second half, Orchestra “Rīga” will be joined by the charismatic vocal duo Aija Vītoliņa and Normunds Rutulis with a selection of international and Latvian songs in jazz-infused Christmas arrangements. The repertoire will include the music of George Gershwin, songs from The Sound of Music, and works by Latvian composers Madars Kalniņš and Māris Ozols.

This concert pays tribute to the legends who defined swing: Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and more.

Taking the stage with Orchestra RIGA are two dazzling vocalists: Latvia’s own Daumants Kalniņš and Estonia’s celebrated jazz and soul singer Sofia Rubina-Hunter. With a voice full of warmth and charisma, Sofia has graced top venues like New York’s “Blue Note” and toured across Asia and Europe. She has performed with jazz greats such as Joe Lovano, Danilo Perez, Raimonds Pauls, and even shared the stage with Seal and Incognito. Listeners are invited to experience powerful Latvian contemporary music in a unique historical setting. Join us for a special commemorative concert, “Uz gaismu” (“Towards the Light”), held annually to honour the memory of Latvian families deported by the Soviet regime in June 1941. The concert is free of charge and will take place in the atmospheric setting of St. John’s Church—one of Riga’s oldest churches.

The concert will feature Orchestra “Rīga”, joined by the male voices of State Choir “Latvija”, soprano Katrīna Paula Felsberga, and tenor Mārtiņš Zvīgulis, under the baton of conductor Valdis Butāns.

This concert also marks the 81st birthday of celebrated Latvian composer Vilnis Šmīdbergs, recipient of the Latvian Grand Music Award for lifetime achievement. His opus “Uz gaismu” symbolizes a journey from darkness to light, expressing themes of hope, remembrance, and transformation.

The concert “Uz gaismu” will take place on June 14, 2025, at 7:00 PM at St. John’s Church (Sv. Jāņa baznīca) in Riga’s Old Town.

Every August, Orchestra RIGA invites symphonic music listeners to immerse in the grandeur of wind orchestra sounds within the acoustics of historical Riga Cathedral. The annual concert series has become a signature music event in Riga’s summer event calendar where Orchestra RIGA and Riga Cathedral organ meet in majestic harmony. This year’s concerts feature two distinctive programs, each offering a dialogue between eras, styles, and sonorities. Under the direction of Latvian conductors Valdis Butāns and Guntis Kuzma, showcasing masterpieces from Bach, Mozart and Debussy to contemporary music composition master Rihards Dubra and Dutch composer Johan de Meij.

The concert offers a vibrant fusion of Baroque, Impressionist, and modern sacred music sounds. The program includes J. S. Bach’s E-flat major Prelude and Fugue, BWV 552, as arranged by D. Hunsberger, bringing out the full richness of the wind orchestra, and the Concerto in D minor — a transcription of one of Vivaldi’s violin concertos (BWV 596), showcasing Bach’s admiration for Italian brilliance, known for its rich and colorful timbre. Organist Aigars Reinis will also interpret Claude Debussy’s The Sunken Cathedral (La Cathédrale engloutie) — a haunting vision rendered in an evocative orchestration by Jean-Louis Roques. This is paired with Debussy’s ethereal Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, arranged for winds by M. Bašs, opening up new textures while retaining the introspective atmosphere of the original. The two works by Latvian composer Rihards Dubra — Toccata (for organ) and Awaiting the Dawn (for organ and wind orchestra) — create a contemplative finale: music that bridges liturgical tradition with modern expressivity.

The second concert in the Summer Classics series offers a colorful musical journey spanning three centuries — from the Baroque to the present day. A varied program that brings together the clarity of Johann Sebastian Bach, the elegance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the bold sonic architecture of contemporary Dutch composer Johan de Meij. J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B-flat major (BWV 596), here in a wind orchestra arrangement by R. L. Moehlmann. This piece is, in fact, Bach’s organ transcription of Vivaldi’s Concerto in D minor (RV 565), an inspiring example of Baroque-era musical exchange and admiration. Organist Kristīne Adamaite will also perform the imposing Prelude and Fugue in C minor (BWV 546), known for its grand, noble prelude and complex fugue. W. A. Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major (KV 191), written at the age of 18, showcases the instrument’s lyrical and agile nature, interpreted by soloist Raimonds Gulbis. Two of Mozart’s rarely heard organ works — the lively Leipzig Gigue and the delicate Andante in F major, originally composed for mechanical organ — reveal the composer’s refined expression in miniature form. Concluding the evening are Johan de Meij’s symphonic works The Red Tower and Echoes of San Marco, contemporary soundscapes inspired by history and architecture.

For over a decade, the Summer Classics series has presented wind and organ repertoire in concerts that reimagine classical works for modern audiences. With thoughtful programming and inspired collaborations between Orchestra RIGA and Latvia’s leading musicians, the concerts attract seasoned listeners and newcomers alike. Orchestra RIGA’s artistic team continually explores the boundaries of what wind orchestra can achieve in dialogue with the organ—an instrument that is both architectural and expressive, especially when placed at the heart of one of the Baltics’ most iconic sacred spaces – Riga Cathedral.

This summer, Orchestra “Riga” once again invites classical music lovers to the heart of Riga Old Town for the Summer Classics concert series taking place at the historic Riga Cathedral – one of the most majestic and acoustically rich sacred venues in Latvia. Led by conductor Guntis Kuzma, the concert offers a colorful musical journey spanning three centuries — from the Baroque to the present day.

J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B-flat major (BWV 596), here in a wind orchestra arrangement by R. L. Moehlmann. This piece is, in fact, Bach’s organ transcription of Vivaldi’s Concerto in D minor (RV 565), an inspiring example of Baroque-era musical exchange and admiration. Organist Kristīne Adamaite will also perform Prelude and Fugue in C minor (BWV 546), known for its grand, noble prelude and complex fugue. W. A. Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major (KV 191), written at the young age of 18, showcases the instrument’s lyrical and agile nature, interpreted by soloist Raimonds Gulbis. Two of Mozart’s rarely heard organ works — the lively Leipzig Gigue and the delicate Andante in F major, originally composed for mechanical organ — reveal the composer’s refined expression in miniature form. Concluding the evening are Johan de Meij’s symphonic works The Red Tower and Echoes of San Marco — contemporary soundscapes inspired by history and architecture.

This summer, lovers of outstanding symphonic music are once again invited to experience the Summer Classics concert series, presented by Orchestra “Riga” at the iconic Riga Cathedral. Experience an enchanting evening classical music performed by Orchestra RIGA led by conductor Valdis Butāns, featuring the magnificent Riga Cathedral organ played by Aigars Reinis.

The program highlights three masters of classical and contemporary symphonic music. J. S. Bach and C. Debussy represent two pillars of the Baroque and Impressionist traditions, while Rihards Dubra a renowned Latvian composer, brings contemplative depth and modern resonance to the evening’s repertoire. The program includes J. S. Bach’s E-flat major Prelude and Fugue, BWV 552, in an arrangement by D. Hunsberger that brings out the full richness of the wind orchestra, and the Concerto in D minor — a transcription of one of Vivaldi’s violin concertos (BWV 596), showcasing Bach’s admiration for Italian brilliance, known for its rich and colorful timbre. Organist Aigars Reinis will also interpret Claude Debussy’s The Sunken Cathedral (La Cathédrale engloutie) — a haunting vision rendered in an evocative orchestration by Jean-Louis Roques. This is paired with Debussy’s ethereal Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, arranged for winds by M. Bašs, opening up new textures while retaining the introspective atmosphere of the original. The two works by Latvian composer Rihards Dubra — Toccata (for organ) and Awaiting the Dawn (for organ and wind orchestra) — create a contemplative finale: music that bridges liturgical tradition with modern expressivity.

Founded in 1988, Stockholm Chamber Brass (SCB) gained immediate recognition by winning 1st Prize at the International Brass Quintet Competition in Narbonne, France. Over the past 35 years, SCB has become one of the world’s leading brass ensembles, commissioning more than 50 new works from distinguished composers such as Anders Hillborg and Andrea Tarrodi.

Their internationally acclaimed recordings, including Clockworks (1995) and Then (2013), reflect SCB’s innovative repertoire. The prestigious American Record Guide wrote about Clockworks: “Cannot imagine that a better brass quintet has ever existed.”

SCB regularly performs at major festivals and, since 2016, has run Stockholm Chamber Brass Academy in Sweden, blending chamber music traditions with modern musical expressions.

Outside the quintet, its members are active as soloists, professors, orchestra principals, and conductors. They have won prizes in international solo competitions, including the ARD-Wettbewerb and CIEM Geneva. The current members are Urban Agnas and Tom Poulson (trumpets), Anna Ferriol De Ciurana (horn), Jonas Bylund (trombone), and Dirk Hirthe (tuba).
